Indecent Dressing: A Taint On Our Cultural Disposition. (Part 1)

One of the values of the African culture is to appear decent in looks and actions, but in recent times, the reversed has been the case, as immorality has eaten deep into the roots of our societal values and beliefs.

Indecent dressing, also known as immodest dressing was once uncommon in Africa, but today, it is progressively becoming part of us and at the same time, leading to the increase in the rate of immorality in our society.

This act, also known as dress to kill is very common among colleges of education, polytechnics and university students, especially the females.

They dress in such manner, all with an aim of looking tantalizing, sexy and attractive instead of dressing in a responsible way. Strapless clothes, bum shorts, short blouse, miniskirts/gown, cleavage shirts, sagging of trousers by boys and even girls are the major problems associated with dressing indecently today.

As if this ugly act is not enough, some students also wear transparent clothes, thereby revealing their body anatomy which ought not to be seen in public. These dressing patterns are so many with more still coming up due to the progressiveness of fashion.

Nigeria is a nation that is endowed with varieties of culture and traditions; it is annoying seeing these culture and traditions going into extinction. Nigerians find it difficult to dress in their local attire as it is regarded as “old and archaic.”

Indecent dressing is a habit embraced by all ages in the society. It has been inculcated by both the young and the old. Although, it may be legally difficult to determine what qualifies as indecent dressing, considering the different cultures and religious set up in the country, some dressings, however, may be offensive to human reasoning.
