Students of Edo State Polytechnic Usen, have called on leaders of the host community and management of the Institution to come to their aids as the rate of renting an apartment has skyrocketed and has become unbearable.
The students urged relevant authorities to wade into what has become a very worrisome trend in the polytechnic community, as the fee of almost every house within the community has gone up.
A student from the department of Business Administration, Olayemi Bukola, said her house rent is almost four times her tuition fee.
The situation has forced her to opt for a roommate as her parents cannot afford to pay such an exorbitant fee on rent alone.
Another student who pleaded anonymity said, most of the landlords do not allow half payment no matter the price.
She further stated that the rent for a self-contained apartment has risen to between 90,000 naira and 150,000 naira while that of a single room has risen to 65,000 naira. One of the landlords who preferred to be anonymous, said the high cost of building materials and other commodities is largely responsible for the increment.
